Maybe one of you wants to work on the marriage and the other is not sure. Maybe your family is facing a change you never expected. Or maybe something painful you have lived through is still affecting how you feel about yourself and the people you love.
You do not have to figure out the next step alone.

Find the support you need
We believe difficult conversations can lead to change
Helping people through their most challenging life transitions and navigating difficult conversations with them is our passion.
Why? Because the patterns in our relationships affect more than the moment we are in. When you learn to communicate differently, work through conflict, and care for yourself and the people you love, that change can reach beyond you. Your children see how you handle hard moments. They can learn that people can disagree, repair, and stay connected.
We want to help you grow into the person and partner you want to be. It is vital to us at Sparrow Counseling to keep people talking so that connection is not lost.
You can make a transition without it breaking down and going into chaos. You do not need chaos for change to happen. Let us help you find a way forward.
Couples counseling
You love each other. Why does it feel so hard to connect?
You may be tired of arguing about the same things. One of you tries to talk and the other pulls away. You both leave the conversation feeling unheard, even though you both want things to get better.
In couples counseling, we help you slow down and understand what keeps happening between you. You can learn how to say what you need, listen with more understanding, work through conflict, and repair after you hurt each other.
We also want to know what you are hoping for. Maybe you want to laugh together again, feel like a team, rebuild trust, or talk about more than schedules and responsibilities. Those desires matter. Our work is about helping you build the skills to move toward the relationship you want.
Couples intensives
Give your relationship the time and attention it needs
You may be facing a crisis, feeling stuck in the same painful pattern, or wanting to give your relationship the attention it has needed for a long time. When a conversation finally gets to the deeper issue, it can be hard to stop because the session is over.
A couples intensive gives you the luxury of time. Over one or two days, you can have conversations that might otherwise take months to reach in weekly therapy. There is room to say the things you have struggled to put into words, understand what is happening between you, and begin learning a different way to respond.
You will practice those skills together while your therapist is there to support you. Think of it like working with a personal trainer. It is one thing to hear what might help; it is another to try it, get guidance in the moment, and keep practicing until it begins to feel more possible.
An intensive can give your relationship a concentrated period of care when you need it most. You do not need to arrive knowing how to fix everything. You just need to be willing to make time for each other and begin.
Discernment counseling
When you are unsure about the future of your marriage
It is painful when one of you wants to keep working on the relationship and the other is unsure. You may feel pressure to decide what comes next before you fully understand how you got here.
Discernment counseling gives you space to slow down and look honestly at your relationship. We help each of you understand your part in what has happened and consider the paths available to you.
You do not have to come in with a decision already made. This is a place to seek clarity and confidence about the future of your marriage.
Trauma and EMDR therapy
What happened to you does not have to shape every moment ahead
You may know that an experience is in the past, yet still feel its effects in your body, your thoughts, or your relationships. You might feel anxious, overwhelmed, or on guard without always knowing why.
We offer individual therapy, including EMDR, for people who want help working through trauma and painful experiences. We will take time to understand what you are carrying, explain the process, and move at a pace that fits your needs.
Healing can make room for you to feel more present in your life and more connected to yourself and others.
Support for families through change
Changes in a family can bring grief, uncertainty, and conversations no one feels ready to have. Separation, divorce, co parenting, and blending families can all affect the relationships you care about most.
We help families have difficult conversations, reduce conflict, and find healthier ways to move forward. Even when life does not look the way you expected, there are ways to care for one another through the change.
What happens when you reach out?
1. Schedule a free consultation
Start with a 15 minute phone call with a therapist. Tell us what has been difficult and what you hope might change. You do not need to have the right words. We will ask a few questions to understand your situation and see whether working together feels like a good fit for both you and the therapist.
2. Find the right place to begin
Relationships are complex, and the support you need may not be obvious at first. During the consultation, we will talk about your goals and help you consider whether couples counseling, an intensive, discernment counseling, individual therapy, or family therapy is the right place to start.
3. Begin the work together
Your therapist will take time to get to know you and understand the patterns that keep you stuck. We will help you see how your own experiences, including your family history and past hurts, may shape the way you relate to others today. Together, we will identify where you want to grow, practice new ways of responding, and make a plan for moving forward.

Meet Sparrow Counseling
I’m Sara Hadgraft, the founder of Sparrow Counseling. I started this practice because I believe relationships matter deeply, especially when life gets hard. The way we connect with others, and whether we feel seen and loved, matters to us and to the people we care about.
I wanted to create a place where we would be willing to go to the hard places with individuals, couples, and families. A place where you could say what has been difficult to say, have the conversations that matter, and find more connection on the other side of them.
I also believe this work matters beyond our own relationships. We want to build the relationships we long for, and we want our children to see what healthy relationships can look like. When they see us have hard conversations, take responsibility, and repair after someone has been hurt, we give them ways to do the same. Those skills can help them stay connected to the people they love, even through difficult times and transitions.
Our team helps people through painful experiences and important decisions. We want to understand what matters most to you, help you see the patterns that may be keeping you stuck, and support you as you find a way forward.
We know reaching out can feel vulnerable. We also believe it is a brave first step. You will be met with care, honesty, and room to tell us what is really happening.

At Sparrow Counseling, we deeply believe in the transformative power of therapy and see it as a valuable investment in your emotional and relational well-being. Therapy can be incredibly rewarding for those who are open and ready to explore and amend dysfunctional relational patterns. However, it's important to recognize that the investment goes beyond financial considerations—it also involves your time, energy, and emotional openness. As you and your therapist work together to change how you relate to others and yourself, it may feel uncomfortable at times, but the growth that comes from this process can be life-changing. Here is a post we wrote about the investment of therapy and why we think it is worth it!
If you're considering therapy, it's natural to wonder about the costs. Each practice handles this differently—some may accept insurance, while others, like us at Sparrow Counseling, do not. We have chosen this path to ensure the best care and privacy for our clients. Read why we don't take insurance and what our rates are here.

Reaching out to a counselor or therapist is a courageous step towards understanding and managing your emotions and relationships. But how do you know when it's time to take that step? Often, it’s when daily life becomes consistently challenging. Perhaps there’s a lingering sadness that won’t go away, or you and your partner find yourselves trapped in the same cycles of arguments and defenses with no resolution in sight. Maybe it’s a pervasive feeling of hopelessness that colors your everyday experiences.
Everyone has a different threshold for when to say, "Enough is enough—I need support." The timing is deeply personal, and there’s no right or wrong moment to seek help. What’s most important is recognizing that you don’t have to face these challenges alone. There are compassionate professionals who are eager to sit with you, share your struggles, and explore better ways to cope and connect with the people you care about. Therapy or counseling isn't just about seeking relief; it's about building a more fulfilling way of life.
-
It’s completely natural to wonder if your reactions or feelings are "too much" or if they genuinely signal a need for therapy. Remember, your feelings are always valid—they are real and important because they reflect your personal experiences. However, feelings aren't always the most reliable sources of information about our needs and situations. They can sometimes lead us to conclusions that aren't entirely accurate or helpful.
That's why at Sparrow Counseling, we believe in the power of having a third-party advocate—an experienced therapist who can help you navigate and sort through your feelings. A therapist acts as an unbiased guide who can help you understand your emotions, discern their roots, and learn how to manage them effectively. This process isn’t about judging if you’re overreacting, but rather about providing support and clarity as you explore your emotional landscape. So, if you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure, consider therapy as a safe space to discover more about yourself and find the balance you seek.

Choosing between individual, couples, or family therapy truly depends on the specific areas of your life you feel drawn to explore and enhance. Each type of therapy offers unique benefits tailored to different needs and goals.
In individual therapy the focus is on you alone—understanding your personal emotions more deeply and developing skills to express these feelings effectively. It’s a space just for you to delve into your inner world, discovering the roots of your feelings and learning how to manage them in a way that enriches your life.
Couples therapy shifts the focus to the relationship between you and your partner. It’s a journey where both of you will learn to communicate your feelings more clearly and listen to each other without judgment. You’ll explore ways to celebrate the differences that make each of you unique, and learn how to manage emotional contagion, where one partner's feelings begin to unduly influence the other's mood. This type of therapy strengthens your bond by developing a deeper understanding and respect for each other's individual experiences.
Family therapy considers the entire family system, as well as the individual roles within it. This approach helps you understand how your family functions collectively and how each member contributes to the family dynamics. You’ll work together to improve communication, ensuring that everyone in the family feels heard and valued. It’s about enhancing the way you express and handle emotions within the family unit, creating a healthier, more supportive environment for all.
Each therapy modality has its place depending on what aspect of your life you are looking to enrich. Whether it’s your personal growth, your relationship, or your family dynamics, therapy can provide a supportive framework to guide you towards more fulfilling interactions and a deeper understanding of yourself and your loved ones.
